Ahhhh, the New Year. Full of possibility and hope.

I haven’t really thought about it that way for a while. My time sense in the last few years has become narrowed down to “If I can just make it past Event X this Saturday, things will get easier,” when I know damn well things won’t get easier, because the backlog of what I’ve pushed aside to get through this one event doesn’t go away, it just waits.

Despite my methods of planning and preparing ahead, some things are just too overwhelming. When I look at the calendar, I see everything that must be done next week and the week after that and the week after that. Dates are recognized in relation to when “that event is going to happen,” not to any particular other significance. Holidays don’t mean much beyond “What is it that I am expected to do to survive?” or “Do the kids have off from school that day and how can I distract them during that time without going bankrupt or insane?” Sometimes it’s even “Who can I pass the kids off to for this time so I can work on house/cubs planning/chores/insert-other-obligation-here.”

To be honest, I’ve let the whole “Planning thing” fall by the wayside.

And then there’s the dreaded journal ads. I’ll be the first to say I have an unhealthy addiction for office supplies, and all these nice new planners are popping up as ads on my feeds. Such pretty bindings with immaculate layouts inside and announcements screeching “ACHIEVE OUR GOALS WITH THIS AWESOME PLANNER!”

Seeing a brand new journal just sets my heart a-flutter until the VOICE OF REASON sounds in my head:

VoR: Seriously? Another journal? Honey, you haven’t even used the ones you’ve got.

Me: I’m waiting for the right thing to use them for. And this one in the ad is-

VoR: Not the layout we like or would consistently use. You know that. We can just print what we need on timeanddate.com.

Me: That site only does monthly and yearly.

VoR: Then use Excel. We should really use Excel. We can experiment with layouts that we might actually use until we find one we like.

Me: But-

VoR: No.

Me: Bitch.

And then it devolves into a slap fight in my brain and I have to go lay down for a while.

So while I’m trying to figure out the CHEAPEST way to appease both sides, it occurred to me that this may be my CHANCE TO CHANGE THE WORLD!

Or, you know, maybe just help out one or 2 folks. Whatever.

This lightbulb went off while I was designing and printing various possible planner layouts (there is a surprising amount of foul language that goes into what you would think is a simple activity of designing a Planner page that has only what is really needed, in the format that works best for your visual brain, and will honestly be used) and also thinking about how disorganized I’ve been this past year(s).

Drunk sailors on a three day pass have routinely walked straighter lines between Points A and B than I did this year, in part because I had no plan (in other news, my lack of discipline is also a thing).

So I thought: “Ya know, maybe I should conduct a year end review of 2017 to come up with a theme or a plot or something for 2018.”

To which, the VOICE OF REASON replied: “Yeah, okay, that sounds like a good idea.” (At which point the mental slap-war ended with a truce to confer, but no promises that hostilities will not resume.)

I then thought: “If I’m thinking this, perhaps some other person might also be interested in what I’m doing and want to apply it to their thoughts. And perhaps add some really deep thing that I haven’t thought of, yet.”

VoR: “Yeah! Workshop it!” (I have no idea what that really means, but I know it sounds cool in the corporate vernacular, so I’ll use it here. I think I’m using right.)

You’ll want to read the questions through first before answering them, because some are similar, but not quite the same as another.

Oooh, that Planner argument. I know it well.
I have two this year… two (which is at least one more than I need… I also use Google Calendar)… One that I spent a bunch of money on through Agendio (whatever you do.. do NOT check out Agendio – unless you have good “not actually spending the money” splurge control) after careful thought and planning and layout work.
The other.. well the other was a splurge purchase while Christmas Shopping, on clearance sale. Guess which one I’m actually using more so far?
    Good luck this year!
