Why Writing is Like a Relationship

a-z blog

No, this is not the same as getting kicked-out or breaking-up.

In every relationship, you need to take a breather. You need to step back and do something else, alone, for a little bit. Perhaps this is to quell the psychotic rage building in your brain because your manuscript just doesn’t understand and won’t cooperate. Maybe you’re just so wrapped up in your story you’ve forgotten there’s a whole real world out there.

“But my novel is so gorgeous!”

Trust me.

You’ll come back re-energized, ready to tackle whatever problem you were facing. That afternoon white-water rafting trip really helped you to see a solution to the problem. The walk in the park helped calm you down a bit. The guys-only weekend camping trip let you blow off a little steam.

Don’t worry, you’re not leaving your writing forever. New experiences help spice things up with your partner.
